The fairy tale "Cinderella" by Charles Perrault is one of the most used works for music and stage. Operas by Rossini, Massenet, Wolf-Ferrari, and Naiden Gerov have been based on it. Ballet masterpieces based on this fairy-tale story are not few. Even Tchaikovsky was asked to write a ballet based on Cinderella, but the project remained unfulfilled. Prokofiev began to write the ballet Cinderella in the spring of 1941, commissioned by the S. М. Kirov". World War II and the invasion of Hitler's Russia hampered Prokofiev's work, evacuations and difficult years followed, yet when the invaders were repulsed to the west and Prokofiev returned to Moscow, he managed to finish the ballet's music and the Bolshoi Theatre included it in its poster for the 1944-1945 season with choreographer Rostislav Zakharov. At the first performances, Olga Lepeshinskaya and Galina Ulanova danced the role of Cinderella. Dmitri Shostakovich hailed the ballet's appearance saying, "Cinderella continues and develops worthily the glorious traditions of Russian ballet art."
