On 8 March at 19.00 on the stage of the Stara Zagora Opera will come to life again the masterpiece of Giacomo Puccini - the opera "Bohemi". What better festive evening than this musical fairy tale featuring two beautiful and strong women!
The performance will be conducted by Ivaylo Krinchev. The world-renowned Romanian artist Catalin Ionescu-Arbore is the author of the original scenography, designed in a cinematic perspective. Established Bulgarian designer Tsvetanka Petkova-Stoynova dresses the characters in beautiful costumes adequate to the era and in sync with the overall atmosphere of the dramatic love story. The production is directed by Ognyan Draganov, who has worked many times in Bulgaria and abroad with this creative team. Ognyan Draganov is staging Bohemi for the second time in his career. Audiences will witness an interesting scenographic and directorial solution that makes maximum use of stage technique - rotating stage, moving platforms, rising platforms, tilts - an approach that changes the narrative within the opera itself by also changing the locations of the action.
The creative team cannot escape too much from the dramaturgically set action, as Puccini's own text and recitatives are very strict," says the director. In the main roles, the audience will see Elena Baramova as Mimi, Peter Kostov as Rudolfo, Valery Turmanov as Marcel, Theodor Petkov as Shonar, Plamen Kumpikov-Colin, Alexander Marulev as Benoît and Alcindor, etc., the orchestra and choir of the State Opera-Stara Zagora, children from the vocal studio "Margaritki" at the State Opera-Stara Zagora.
A pleasant surprise for all spectators will be the expected debut of the beloved theatre actress with many musical performances Antoaneta Dobreva-Neti in the role of Muzeta. Even as a schoolgirl, Netti studied piano and solfege for 7 years at the Petar Beron Community Centre, sang in the Children's Radio Choir with conductor Acad. Hristo Nedyalkov from 1983 to 1991, studied opera singing with prof. С. Ivanova for 3 years and solo singing with Rumyana Marton /theatre 4hC/, took jazz lessons with Orlando Sanchez. She has participated in many musicals on various stages in the capital - "Oliver!", "Love and Death in Moulin Rouge", "Step Forward", etc.
The opera Bohemi was written to a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Ilica, who were also the librettists of many of Puccini's operas. The libretto is based on the novella Scenes from the Life of the Bohemians by Henri Murger. In the second and third acts there is considerable intervention by the librettists, while in the first and fourth acts the authors stick mainly to the content of the novellas. The writing of the libretto continued for more than two years, as Puccini was continually dissatisfied with the librettists' work and repeatedly returned what he had written for revision.
Puccini completed La bohème in eight months. The genius composer was obsessed with his characters: "When I began to describe the death of Mimi and the dark chords came to me, playing them, I was seized with such emotion that I had to get up and alone in the silence of the night I wept uncontrollably."
The first performance of Bohemi took place on 1 February 1896 in Turin. The conductor was Arturo Toscanini. The opera quickly became immensely popular throughout Italy and soon throughout Europe.
In Bulgaria, "La Boheme" was first performed in 1922 at the Sofia Opera under the conductorship of Maestro Georgi Atanasov. On the stage of the Stara Zagora Opera House it was first presented on 3 June 1950. There followed premieres in 1959, 1964, 1976, 1987, 1993.
