Daniela Dyakova:
"The role of Amneris is a dream for every mezzo-soprano..."
Mezzo-soprano Daniela Dyakova is one of the most sought-after and preferred performers of the role of Amneris from Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida. The singer has been acclaimed in dozens of different productions of the opera "Aida" in all opera theatres in Bulgaria, as well as abroad, and has been a guest at a number of prestigious national and international festivals. In her repertoire Daniela Dyakova has more than 30 leading operatic roles from different styles and eras, but she is always happy to play the role of the Egyptian princess.
Her debut as Amneris was unexpected, triumphant, unforgettable! Here is what the singer shares:
"My debut in the role of this amazing character Amneris, was in 2009 at the Prague State Opera. It was an unforgettable experience for me, because to debut this so big and bright role in such an important theatre is really a big responsibility! For me it was a long-awaited dream that I was lucky to fulfil in such an amazing theatre and in the company of a fantastic team from all over the world. The production was the work of the world-renowned Italian masters of the art Gian Luigi Pizzi and his assistant Massimo Gasparone, and the conductor was Giorgio Croci. I was partnered on stage by the brilliant Michelle Crider as Aida. It was a truly stunning experience, and the beautiful dream continued with a month-long tour of Japan. What I remember about that tour was that I had the bad luck just before the trip really got underway and had to leave sick, which complicated the situation quite a bit - I had to get well quickly, and keep myself and my colleagues out of contact. For us singers such a problem is very stressful because everything depends on our health. I had to recover very quickly to start the tour and at the same time isolate myself as much as possible from everyone. But in the end I managed and did a great performance in the amazing Tokyo-Bunkaikan Hall.
The role of Amneris is a dream come true for any mezzo-soprano who sings this type of repertoire, because in this role they can reach their full potential. The role requires a great range of qualities - first and foremost the type of voice and timbre, vocal technique, an extensive register, as well as a lot of thought and multi-layered development in the acting to best portray the richness of feeling and drama that the Verdian heroine brings. A nice but very binding commitment and a huge challenge. One of them, of course, is the 6th picture, where the workload is great and, apart from the duet with Radames, the scene with Ramfis also involves a dedication and demonstration of the whole range of qualities needed to perform this masterpiece role of Amneris. Considering that I've been performing this role for so long now, the experience I've gained with it gives me the confidence and self-assurance to think that I'm really out there "swimming in my own waters". I trust that this time it will be the same and we will create a wonderful celebration for our beloved audience."
