Denis Ivanov for the costumes in "Troubadour"

On 7 July at Beroe Stadium we are waiting for an exciting adventure called Opera at the Stadium. The opera "Il Trovatore" by Giuseppe Verdi will come to life with wonderful voices and impressive vision. The stage design is by Todor Demerov, already an established master in "taming" huge spaces and difficult terrains.

The unique costumes are the work of Denis Ivanov, who created them with much love, dedication and precision to every detail, every fold, every movement of the fabric and every ray that will illuminate with the artificial light of the spotlight. As you've already noticed from the suggestion of the Troubadour poster, this will be a classic but extraordinary production - out of time, unconventional, mysterious, populated with ghosts and apparitions but also with the colours of love. This is Ognyan Draganov's directorial concept, on which Denis drew sketches for the costumes and chose the fabrics.

"The production is in the style of Dracula, everyone is a monster, only Leonora is the only lyrical human being. The costumes are designed in a Gothic style, specifically Burgundian fashion, with inspirations from the architecture of the cathedrals and a refusal to delve deep into the specific historical period as far as costumes are concerned. They are designed in a simple and modernist way, their look is decidedly cubist, with the typical details of Gothic architecture - straight lines and conical shapes.

Azucena is rather the ghost of the burnt gypsy woman. She is, in fact, the very cuckoo of whom Ferrando speaks at the beginning. Her obsession and her complex from the experiences of her life have allowed the ghost of her mother to inhabit her.

People in the 15th century were extremely superstitious and believed in the fantastic. Knights fought dragons and kidnapped princesses. It was a dark but very romantic period of history.

Looking for my costume choices in Troubadour , I mainly took inspiration from the stained glass windows in Gothic cathedrals and castles. The costumes are stained-glass windows brought to life in a stylized version, through the prism of haute couture."

Denis Ivanov drew and coordinated the process of making 10 costumes for the soloists and 50 for the other participating choristers.

"The spooky and the eerie are also present in the colour scheme. The fabulous and the romantic are in the shape of the costumes. For Troubadour, which we will see at the Beroe Stadium on 7 July, I would say this briefly. Still, don't be afraid and come to see an incredibly impactful vision and hear wonderful voices!"

Denis Ivanov is studying "Scenography for Musical Theatre" for his Master's degree with prof. Svetoslav Kokalov and Assoc. Prof. Marina Raicinova at the National Academy of Arts.
