Kaludi Kaludov, Anna Ditri and Alexander Krunev in Tosca

Kaludi Kaludov, Anna Ditri and Alexander Krunev in "Tosca" on 28 April

On the eve of the most holy Christian holiday Easter, on 28 April, at 19.00, the Stara Zagora Opera will offer opera lovers a meeting with one of the most outstanding masterpieces in the world's musical treasury - the opera Tosca by Giacomo Puccini. The premiere performance took place on 18 March in the packed hall of the Stara Zagora Opera House and was accompanied by the thunderous ovations of the enchanted audience.

On 28 April, the world-renowned tenor Kaludi Kaludov will once again play his crown role - that of the painter Mario Cavaradossi, and his Tosca will be Anna Ditri - his partner on stage and in life. Anna Ditri, who for several seasons was a soloist of the Stara Zagora Opera, will perform for the first time in front of the Stara Zagora audience in the role of Floria Tosca. A role which the singer reached for at the very beginning of her professional career and which years later became her favourite and landmark. Baron Scarpia will be Alexander Krunev, who is unquestionably considered by connoisseurs to be one of the best Bulgarian interpreters of the complex and rich character. The performance will be conducted by Ivaylo Krinchev. Directed by Ognyan Draganov, stage adaptation by Todor Demerov, choir conductor Mladen Stanev. Also participating are the Vocal Formation of the "Margaritki" Youth Youth Youth School with director Zornitsa Zhelyazkova, the Pre-Bulgarian Survival School "Baga-Tour", orchestra, choir of the State Opera-Stara Zagora.

For the first time in our country "Tosca" was presented by the Sofia National Opera in 1925 under the direction of Yuri Pomerantsev in a stage production by Hr. Popov.

In Stara Zagora the opera Tosca was first staged on 18 December 1937. The conductor was Peter Spiridonov, the director Stefan Makedonski, the painter Dr. Buchinski, the choirmaster Boris Fetvadjiev. There followed premieres in 1945, 1954, 1965, 1977, 1984, 1989, 1992. The last of them was on 1 July 1998 - conductor Nedyalko Nedyalkov-guest, director Nina Naydenova, artist Radostin Chomakov, choirmaster Emil Minev.

Inspired by the performance of the famous theatre actress Sarah Bernard in the role of Tosca from the eponymous play by the French playwright Victorien Sardou, Giacomo Puccini decided to write an opera. The year is 1889. Exactly 10 years of preparation for Tosca, but Puccini did not give up his intention, despite the accompanying difficulties. In the meantime, he wrote his opera La bohème. Puccini commissioned his librettists Giacosa and Illica to write the text of the future opera, and the two experienced thespians reworked the five-act drama into a libretto of three acts. Victorien Sardou himself later admitted that the libretto, despite the cuts, recreated almost the entire content of the drama, even making it more suspenseful and evocative. In the summer of 1898, the forty-year-old Puccini began hard work on the opera Tosca. In less than a year and a half he completed it. The first performance of Tosca was on 14 January 1900 at the Teatro Constanzi in Rome and was a huge success. That same year the opera was staged in London and Paris, and then in all the opera houses of the world.
