The creative year 2017 begins for the State Opera Stara Zagora with the fairytale ballet The Nutcracker by P.I. Tchaikovsky on 17 January at 7 pm.
Alida Boneva restored on the stage of the Opera "The Nutcracker", a production from 2009, in which now participates the entire staff of the ballet and children from the "Margaritki" Youth Ballet with director Radost Mladenova-Arabadjieva. The style of this performance is neoclassical, which is very difficult to do because you have to know the classics extremely well to allow yourself to build on them. The charming ballerina Kremena Kostova makes her debut as Masha on January 17, Stanko Tanev is the Prince/the Nutcracker, Ivaylo Yanev is the guest Drosselmeyer, Ivelin Khristakiev and Zlatomir Kolev are Franz, The Mother and the Snow Queen is Bilyana Cholakova, the Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Irish, French dances are performed by all the artists from the Opera Ballet and the talented children from the Daisies.
Following the success of Sleeping Beauty in 1890, Ivan Vsevolozhsky, director of the Imperial Theatres, commissioned Tchaikovsky to compose a work in two acts combining opera and ballet. The opera was Iolanta. For the ballet, Tchaikovsky again turned to the choreographer Marius Petipa, with whom he had collaborated on Sleeping Beauty. The material that Petipa chose was an adaptation of Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann's short story, "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" by Alexandre Dumas, the father, called "The Tale of the Nutcracker." The plot of Hoffman's tale / and Dumas' adaptation / is largely simplified for the purposes of a ballet in two acts. Petipa gives extremely detailed instructions for the composition of each section of the work, including tempo and bar. The composer was not happy with these restrictions and was reluctant to work on the ballet.
The Nutcracker was premiered on 18 December 1892 along with the premiere of the opera Iolanta at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, Russia. The first performance was not a great success; the ballet was first performed outside Russia in 1943 in England, and in 1944 was the first performance in the United States by the San Francisco Ballet. In 1954 it was performed in New York, which was a huge success and has been traditionally performed at Christmas every year since.
This is the last performance of The Nutcracker for the winter season, following the success and packed houses on December 28 and 29 last December. We look forward to seeing you there!
