The Nutcracker ballet to music by Tchaikovsky is one of the most watched and beloved ballets in the world.
The libretto is based on Hoffmann's fairy tales "The Nutcracker" and "The King of Mice" and tells the story of a little girl Clara who receives a present for Christmas Eve - a nutcracker soldier in the splendid uniform of a royal guardsman.
The first performance of The Nutcracker was on December 18, 1892 at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Since the late 1960s, The Nutcracker has become the most performed ballet work - traditionally at Christmas and New Year's celebrations around the world.
As the curtain rises we see the Stalbaum family preparing for Christmas Eve. Clara, her younger brother Fritz, decorating the Christmas tree. The biggest surprise of the evening is the Christmas presents handed out by Clara's father, disguised as the mysterious wizard Drosselmeyer. There are presents for all the children and everyone is happy except Clara, who has not yet received a present. Drosselmeyer then whips out a toy nutcracker in the traditional form of a soldier, in a splendid uniform from the Royal Guard. Clara is over the moon with happiness, but out of jealousy, her brother Fritz breaks the toy. Drosselmeyer finds the broken toy and repairs it.
When the party ends and the Stalbaums go to sleep, Clara worries about her toy and goes to the Christmas tree to see it. She falls asleep under the tree with the nutcracker in her hands. The clock strikes midnight, Clara is dreaming. She hears the sound of mice and tries to escape, but the mice stop her. Then suddenly the Christmas tree begins to grow and fills the room, the nutcracker soldier comes to life and he and his soldiers defend Clara in battle with the Mouse King's army.
Then suddenly the Nutcracker becomes a prince. Clara and the prince travel to a world where they are greeted by dancing snowflakes and fairies. They continue their journey to the land of the Sugar Fairy, where sweets greet them with many dances.
There are Spanish chocolate dancers, Chinese tea dancers, Arabic coffee dancers, Russian candy cane dancers, the dance of the marzipan shepherds, the Sugar Fairy and the dance of the flowers. After the festival ends, Clara wakes up under the Christmas tree with the Nutcracker in her hands.
