29 April - International Dance Day

Trisha Brown - the author of the 2017 address

In 1982, the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI) chose April 29 as Dance Day. The date is, of course, symbolic - every year on April 29, the birth of the great French dance reformer Jean-Georges Nover (1927-1810) is also celebrated, and the world pays its respects to that most sublime of arts, dance.

A performing art whose content is revealed through dance-musical images - this is the definition of ballet today. And according to Jean-Georges Nover, the creator of ballet as a distinct theatrical genre, it is "drama written with music and embodied through choreography"! Nover's birth date - 29 April - has been designated by UNESCO as a celebration of dance worldwide. Because "All modern dance theatre derives from his action ballets!" claims Maurice Béjart. Ballet, he says, is not entertainment for the public, but an art designed to benefit society.

Every year, a salute from a world-renowned choreographer and dancer spreads throughout the world. The individual is chosen by the founders of International Dance Day, the International Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute (ITI), in conjunction with the World Dance Alliance, an associate member of the ITI. The special address for the International Day of Dance aims, by celebrating the day of dance, to draw attention to the universality of this art form, to cross all political, cultural ethnic barriers and to bring people closer to each other - with a common language - that of dance.

The 2017 address was authored by Trisha Brown, a US-born dancer and choreographer, dance theorist and artistic director of Trisha Brown Company. Sadly, this is the last message of the celebrated Trisha Brown, who left this world on March 18 this year. As one of the most influential and acclaimed choreographers and dancers of her time, Trisha's groundbreaking work forever changed the face of contemporary dance. The loss is great for the entire dance world, but it will forever remain in the hearts of dance and performing arts lovers.

"I became a dancer because of my desire to be able to fly. The transcendental in gravity has always excited me. There is no secret meaning in my dancing. They are a spiritual exercise in physical form. Dance conveys and expands the universal language of communication, giving birth to joy, beauty, and the advancement of human knowledge. Dance means creativity... again and again... in thinking, in creating, in doing and in performing. Our bodies are an instrument of expression, not a means of performance. This concept liberates our creativity, which is the most essential lesson and gift of making art. An artist's life does not end with age, as some critics believe. Dance is made of people, people and ideas. As an audience, you can take the creative impulse home with you and apply it to your everyday life."
