The opera-puppet performance of the opera "Turandot" by Giacomo Puccini will be presented on March 6 at 7 pm on the opera stage. On 6 March, Stara Zagora residents and guests of the millennial city will have the opportunity to applaud for the first time the Romanian tenor Daniel Macdall in the role of Calaf /familiar to the audience in Stara Zagora from the premiere performance of the opera "The African" by J. Mayerber/.

The role of Turandot will be sung on March 6 by the opera prima donna Tsvetelina Vassileva. The singer, affectionately titled as one of the most beautiful Bulgarian operatic voices, won the applause of Stara Zagora residents at the premiere of the fairytale "Turandot" in the role of Liu, and in November 2018 she stunningly performed in the role of Turandot /with this performance starts the 2018/2019 opera season of the Stara Zagora Opera/. The role of Princess Turandot opened new horizons in Tsvetelina Vassileva's career a few years ago. She made her magnificent debut at the Wichita Grand Opera, USA, and was a great success at the opera festival in Split, Croatia. In January 2018, Tsvetelina Vassileva was Turandot in faraway Shanghai in the super-production of Turandot, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of Shanghai Opera. In August 2018, Tsvetelina Vassileva was again Turandot in the Puccini Festival's production of the same name, Torre del Lago, presented on the stage of Olavinlinna Castle at the prestigious Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland. In both Shanghai and Savonlinna, the charming soprano partnered the brilliant Amadi Laga as Calaf.

In the role of Liu for the first time on the Stara Zagora stage the soprano from France - Fabien Conrad with a glittering international career, and in the role of Timur the audience will again enjoy the art of the famous Bulgarian bass Julian Konstantinov. Also taking part are the soloists Alexander Marulev, Georgi Dinev, Ivaylo Yovchev, Ivan Kabamitov, Simeon Simeonov, the orchestra and choir of the State Opera-Stara Zagora, artists from the State Puppet Theatre-Stara Zagora, children from the vocal studio of the DYSSOB "Margaritki", representatives of the Pre-Bulgarian Survival School "Baga-Tur". The performance will be conducted by Vladimir Boshnakov.

We would like to remind you that for the first time in the history of opera art in Bulgaria on 29 March 2018 on the stage of the State Opera-Stara Zagora was presented a large opera with puppets. The opera-puppet performance of the opera "Turandot" by Puccini was realized by the two leading cultural institutes in the City of Lime Trees - the State Opera-Stara Zagora and the State Puppet Theatre - Stara Zagora. On 13 July 2018, this performance was a huge success at the Mozart Festival in Pravets.

The spectacular task was entrusted to an outstanding international creative team consisting of proven artists in both arts - opera and puppet theatre. The directors are Ognian Draganov and Darin Petkov, set and costume design Katalin Ionescu-Arbore /Romania/, Vasil Rokomanov and Silva Bachvarova, artistic lighting Vasko Lisichov /Macedonia/, sculpture Hze Fu-Chen /Taiwan/, choirmaster Mladen Stanev.

The creative team relied on the classic presentation of the fairy tale story in the opera Turandot. The basis of the director's concept is the transformation of the Chinese princess Turandot from a child into a woman. This transformation takes place in front of the viewer's eyes - Turandot, who approaches the world around her as if she were playing with dolls, is suddenly confronted with reality and no longer has the strength to resist. She is overwhelmed by love...

Using the power of puppetry, the director Ognyan Draganov in tandem with the puppet actor and director Darin Petkov present to the viewer the touching Chinese fairy tale in an extraordinary way with a lot of plasticity, theatrical means of expression and spectacular stage vision. And an unusual and surprising finale! Romanian artist Katalin Arbore unleashed her boundless talent in paintings illustrating the authentic Chinese national colour. Masks, kimonos, traditional Chinese costumes, wigs and ornaments add to the lavish spectacle of the show. There is also an impressive puppet presence in the set design, in which the main characters are depicted with moving mechanical figures and vivid artistic canvases. Puppets that come to life. The "puppet part" - heads, constructions, costumes of the puppets are designed by the famous Bulgarian master artists Vasil Rokomanov and Silva Bachvarova.

The project "Turandot" breaks the traditional notions of opera performance. The search for the different, without disturbing the true intention of the composer and playwright, but to arouse the curiosity of the audience, young and old, towards the new "opera artist" - the puppet. The aim is to make the audience believe that it can be so, that the PUPPET is that unwritten image in the opera score that can strengthen the main theme, nuance it even more.
