After graduating from the State Choreographic School in Sofia, CHRISTIAN BAKALOV began his dance career in Paris with the Young Ballet of France and the National Dance Centre in Nantes.
Since 2009 he has been living and working in Brussels, where he participated in the opening of the independent space Volksroom by the artist Ivo Dimchev.
He is known as a performer in the productions of Jan Fabre, Ivo Dimchev and Meath Warlop, but has also appeared in productions by Robert Wilson, Jerome Bell and Florentina Holzinger & Vincent Riebeck.
In 2013 he began to develop his first immersive performative installation BRIGHT, in which the audience plays the main role. Blurring the boundaries between performative action and visual installation, Bakalov developed a series of "immersive methods" to introduce the audience to a parallel world by influencing their senses.
His performative installations from the ETERNIA trilogy inspired by Spinoza's concept of Eternity have been presented in Paris, Brussels, New York, Venice, Sofia and in Stara Zagora in 2019.
In Bulgaria, Hristian Bakalov has choreographed for the companies of the ArabesqueBallet and the Sofia Opera Ballet under the direction of Sylvia Tomova, at whose invitation he is restaging his choreography The Following, based on a song by Jacques Brel, for the State Opera-StaraZagora Ballet in2019.
Hristian Bakalov graduated in pedagogy at the National Centre for Dance in Paris, where he taught at the International Dance Academy. He became a French citizen in 1995 and was awarded the Paris Opera Prize.
